Cross or Stake
How Jesus hands were situated at his death is purely academic. It has become an issue because Jehovah's Witnesses
view the cross as an identifier of false Christians. The cross becomes an ongoing form of reinforcement that Jehovah's Witnesses have truth and Christendom is reserved for destruction as part of Babylon the Great, as indicated in the following quote:
"There are also inanimate objects that if venerated may lead to breaking God's commandments. Among the most prominent is the cross. For centuries it has been used by people in Christendom as part of their worship.
… Soon God will execute his judgments against all false religions. Those who cling to them will suffer their fate."
Watchtower 1989 May 1 p.23
The Watchtower makes the claim that Jesus died on a stake and that the cross is a pagan, idolatrous symbol.
These claims are unfounded and this section presents the ample evidence that Jesus died on a cross.
Paul shows that the cross is not only acceptable but an important part of Christianity.
1 Corinthians 1:17-18 "For Christ dispatched me, not to go baptizing, but to go declaring the good news,
not with wisdom of speech, that the torture stake [cross] of the Christ should not be made useless.
For the speech about the torture stake [cross] is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is God's power."

Underlying Flaw
The Watchtower reasons that Staurous did not mean Cross till "later" than Jesus time. This will be shown to be incorrect.
|
It needs to be noted that for over 50 years the Watchtower Society used the cross,
taught that Jesus died on a cross and even included it on the cover of the
Watch Tower:
"Jesus was crucified upon the cross" Life (1929) p.216
"The cross of Christ is the greatest pivotal truth of the divine arrangement, from which radiate the hopes of men." The Harp of God (Rutherford) p.141
It was not until well into the time of Rutherford in the 1930's that the anti-cross teaching was developed.
Rutherford started to promote the view of several Protestant preachers that the word stauros was not known as
cross until Constantine introduced it 300 years after Jesus death.
1
This was supposedly done by Constantine to make Christianity more appealing to the Pagans that were already using
the cross as a symbol. This article shows that this is not borne out by history.
There is ample evidence that in Jesus' time stauros could refer to a cross, the cross was a common form of
torture, that Jesus was crucified and Christians were identified by the symbol of a cross 200 years prior to Constantine.
Most importantly, Scriptural references to Jesus death show that he was on a cross.
